1- ¿Cuándo empezaste a pintar?

Empecé a pintar cuando tenía 15 años. Me apasionaba mucho ver el graffiti en las calles. Me gustaba mucho la música metal y asociaba las portadas de los álbumes con esas caligrafías súper enredadas que veía en el graffiti. Sin embargo, por razones académicas y personales, dejé de pintar por mucho tiempo, pero siempre mantenía el graffiti en mi mente. Me atrevo a decir que volví a pintar hace unos 3 años. De hecho, diría que comencé a sentir el graffiti como una parte de mí, y todo cambió. Siento que comenzó un viaje de introspección y autodescubrimiento a través del graffiti.

1- When did you start painting?

I started painting when I was 15 years old. I was very passionate about seeing graffiti in the streets. I really liked metal music and associated the album covers with these super tangled calligraphy styles that I saw in graffiti. However, due to academic and personal reasons, I stopped for a long time, but I always kept graffiti in my mind. I dare say I started painting again about 3 years ago. In fact, I would say I began to feel graffiti as a part of me, and everything changed. I feel like a journey of introspection and self discovery through graffiti began.

2- ¿Dónde hiciste tus primeras piezas?

En el norte de Bogotá.

2- Where did you make your first pieces?

At the north of Bogotá.

3- ¿De dónde salió el nombre de Refak?

Cuando quise buscar un tag para hacer graffiti, hace años vi una película llamada Freak and the Monster. Era sobre un chico grandote y algo torpe que llevaba a otro chico minusválido en su hombro. Me gustó mucho esa película, sobre todo por el tema de la empatía y la colaboración, así que decidí que Freak sería mi AKA de graffiti. Hice piezas y demás, pero cuando comencé a sentir el graffiti, también sentí que ese AKA ya no me representaba en absoluto. Lo sentía estancado e inseguro, incluso me molestaba que me llamaran así. Así que, en vez de eliminar ese antiguo yo, decidí darle una vuelta a las letras, una reinvención del alter ego, tal vez. Además, me gusta bastante la estructura de esas letras, sobre todo empezar con la R y darle fuerza a la K. Por otro lado, me gusta cómo suena; en Colombia usamos la expresión RE para magnificar las palabras. A mí me suena como RE FUCK. ¡Jajaja!

3- Where did the name of Refak come from?

When I wanted to find a tag to do graffiti, years ago I saw a movie named Freak and the Monster. It was about a big, somewhat clumsy kid who carried another handicapped kid on his shoulder. I really liked that movie, especially for the theme of empathy and collaboration, so I decided that Freak would be my graffiti AKA. I made pieces and so on, but when I started to feel graffiti, I also felt that it was an AKA that didn’t represent me anymore. I felt stagnant and insecure. I even got bothered when people called me that, so instead of killing off that old self, I decided to give the letters a twist, a reinvention of my alter ego, perhaps. Also, I really like the structure of these letters, especially starting with the R and giving strength to the K. On the other hand, I like how it sounds; in Colombia, we use the expression RE to magnify words. It sounds like RE FUCK to me. Hahaha.

4- ¿Has tenido algún escritor de referencia?

Claro, he tenido varios, y con el paso del tiempo me encanta que la vida me haya llevado a pintar con ellos. Es más, ahora son amigos que aprecio mucho, de los cuales he aprendido bastante y, sobre todo, he creado lazos fuertes de amistad. Puedo mencionar a Soide, Flame, Plus, Rotkilla, Rayka. Por otro lado, me sorprende mucho el graffiti de Oriente. Las piezas de Rune de Asmoe me parecen tener estilos únicos. Recuerdo hace años un mosaico que hizo Hozoy en colaboración con Motul. Me encantaba ver ese video una y otra vez. También me encantan los estilos experimentales. Podría nombrar a muchas personas en general a quienes admiro mucho, y realmente disfruto ver graffiti todo el tiempo. Es algo que valoro mucho de la globalización y las redes sociales.

4- Have you had any reference writer?

Of course, I’ve had several, and over time, I love that life has led me to paint with them. What’s more, now they are friends I appreciate a lot, from whom I have learned a lot and, above all, I have created strong bonds of friendship. I can mention Soide, Flame, Plus, Rotkilla, Rayka. On the other hand, I’m surprised by the graffiti from the East. The pieces by Rune from Asmoe seem to me to have unique styles. I remember years ago a mosaic that Hozoy made in collaboration with Motul. I loved watching that video over and over again. I also love experimental styles. I could name many people, in general, whom I admire a lot, and I really enjoy seeing graffiti all the time. It’s something I really appreciate about globalization and social media.

5- ¿Qué pintura sueles usar cuando pintas?

Bueno, acá en Colombia tenemos varias marcas de distintos rangos de precios, pero pintamos mucho con pintura látex, te ahorras un montón. Me gusta mucho pintar con Auster, también con Amen y, claro, también con Bulldog y Razza. Son más económicas, pero son buenas pinturas. En general, creo que he aprendido a ser recursivo. A veces tengo un montón de pintura que me queda de comisiones; a veces solo tengo dos aerosoles, algo de látex y ganas de sobra. Por supuesto, cuando se puede pintar con Montana, ¡es lo mejor!

5- What paint do you usually use when you paint?

Well, here in Colombia, we have several brands at different price ranges, but we paint a lot with latex paint; it saves a lot. I really like painting with Auster, also with Amen and, of course, Bulldog and Razza. They are cheaper but good paints. In general, I think I’ve learned to be resourceful. Sometimes I have a lot of paint left over from commissions; sometimes I only have two spray cans, some latex, and a desire to spare. Of course, when you have the chance to paint with Montana, it’s really cool, though.

6- ¿Cuánto piensas en Graffiti al día?

Todo el tiempo me obsesiona un poco, pero a la vez esa obsesión me permite tener ideas y combinaciones de colores para anotar y ejecutar.

6- How much do you think about Graffiti a day?

I’m a bit obsessed with it all the time, but at the same time, that obsession allows me to have ideas and color combinations to write down and execute.

7- ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del Graffiti?

Me gusta mucho compartir con otros, planear ideas, jugar con colores, me gusta la infinidad del graffiti, los distintos estilos, las historias, sentarme a contemplar piezas de otros. No sé, pienso que lo que más me gusta del graffiti es el graffiti como tal.

7- What do you like most about Graffiti?

I really like sharing with others, planning ideas, playing with colors, I like the infinity of graffiti, the different styles, the stories, sitting down to contemplate other people’s pieces. I don’t know, but I think what I like most about graffiti is graffiti itself.

8- Sensaciones al empezar y terminar un muro?

Cuando empiezo, me siento conforme con el sketch y las proporciones. Que haya cerveza y buena música. Y cuando termino, bueno, pienso mucho en qué aspectos puedo hacer mejor o corregir. Antes, me pasaba que no me gustaba al finalizar, pero he aprendido a soltar la expectativa. Ahora me siento feliz de poder pintar y trato de que cada pieza tenga un reto nuevo. Entonces, la mayoría de las veces, me siento feliz por superarlo.

8- Sensations when starting and finishing a piece?

When I start, I feel satisfied with the sketch and the proportions. There is beer and good music. When I finish, I think a lot about what aspects I can do better or correct. Before, it happened to me that I didn’t like it when I finished, but I have learned to let go of expectations. Now I feel happy to be able to paint, and I try to make each piece have a new challenge. So most of the time, I feel happy to overcome it.

9- ¿Ciudades dónde has pintado?

Bogotá, Medellín, São Paulo, Campinas, Ciudad de México, Guadalajara, Philadelphia, Nueva York… Espero que el graffiti me lleve a conocer más.

9- Cities where you have painted?

Bogotá, Medellín, São Paulo, Campinas, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Philadelphia, New York… I hope that graffiti will lead me to know more.

10- ¿Cómo definirías tu estilo?

Es una pregunta bastante amplia. Siento que mi estilo es bastante experimental, pero a medida que pasa el tiempo, converge en ser mi propio estilo. Pienso que lo más importante es fluir. Si siento que fluyo desde el sketch hasta la ejecución, voy por buen camino. De repente, a veces me gusta hacer estilos redondeados y animados; a veces me gusta jugar con la perspectiva. Pero realmente me gustan mucho las piezas planas con líneas rectas y puntos, y si puedo integrar un personaje, mucho mejor.

10- How do you define your style?

It’s a pretty broad question. I feel like my style is quite experimental, but as time goes by, it converges into my own style. I think the most important thing is to flow. If I feel that I flow from the sketch to the execution, I’m on the right track. Suddenly, sometimes I like to do rounded and lively styles; sometimes I like to play with perspective. But I really like flat pieces with straight lines and points, and if I can integrate a character, even better.

11- ¿Cómo está el Graffiti en tu ciudad?

Bogotá tiene exponentes muy fuertes. Hay muchos escritores que admiro muchísimo. A veces siento que los egos no permiten una buena colaboración y la escena está bastante dividida. Aunque considero que hay muy buen graffiti, también siento que la ciudad es caótica y saturada, lo que hace que a veces sea un poco monótono. Me gustaría que las nuevas generaciones busquen su propia identidad a través de la escritura, y no solo intenten replicar estilos. Históricamente, y por situaciones que han involucrado asesinatos de escritores a manos de la policía, es una ciudad bastante abierta al graffiti y al arte urbano. Sin embargo, siento que esto ha puesto a las personas en una zona de confort. Personalmente, pienso que el papel y el lápiz, ver más allá y más al interior, además de aliviar los egos, son claves para fortalecer mucho más la escena.

11- How is Graffiti in your city?

Bogotá has very strong exponents. There are many writers I admire a lot. Sometimes I feel that egos do not allow for good collaboration, and the scene is quite divided. Although I think there is very good graffiti, I also feel that the city is chaotic and saturated, which makes it a bit monotonous at times. I would like the new generations to find their own identity through writing, and not just try to replicate styles. Historically, and due to situations that have involved murders of writers at the hands of the police, it is a city that is quite open to graffiti and urban art. However, I feel that this has put people in a bit of a comfort zone. Personally, I think that paper and pencil, looking beyond and more inward, as well as alleviating egos, are key to further strengthening the scene.

12- ¿Cómo ves el graffiti en España?

Lo veo increíble. Una escena activa desde los años 80 tiene muchísimo que ofrecer y mucha historia. Escritores que admiro un montón, como Ceser, Saker, Musa, El Joel, etc. Toda la cultura del tren, toda la historia de El Muelle… bueno, un sinfín de cosas que admiro. De hecho, recuerdo que cuando era pequeño, veíamos mucho de PEZ a través de revistas que llegaban de Montana, y era algo que se veía tan lejano y tan increíble a la vez. Ahora el Pez vive en Bogotá y ha influido muchísimo en la escena capitalina. También recuerdo ver mucho de Suso 33 y sus propuestas diferentes. Además, algunos exponentes del graffiti en Bogotá ahora viven en España. Espero que este año pueda ir y verlo de cerca. Es una de mis metas para 2025.

12- How do you see graffiti in Spain?

I find it incredible. A scene that has been active since the 80s has a lot to offer and a lot of history. Writers I admire a lot include Ceser, Saker, Musa, El Joel, etc. The entire train culture, the whole history of El Muelle… well, an endless number of things I admire. In fact, I remember that when I was little, we saw a lot of PEZ through magazines that came from Montana, and it seemed so far away and so incredible at the same time. Now PEZ lives in Bogotá and has greatly influenced the capital scene. I also remember seeing a lot of Suso 33 and his different proposals. Moreover, some graffiti exponents from Bogotá now live in Spain. I hope that this year I can go and see it up close. It is one of my goals for 2025.
